March: Sun Peaks’ Velocity Challenge & Speed Skiing WC
The fastest speed skiers from around the globe will converge on Sun Peaks, BC, March 5 to 7, 2004, to compete for FIS World Cup Speed Skiing points as well as the coveted Velocity Challenge trophy.
This season will be the 15th year of this spectacular event, making it the longest running speed skiing race in the western hemisphere and the only FIS World Cup speed skiing event to be held in North America this season.
Sun Peaks Resort will see up to 75 racers from 10 countries battle on the technically difficult Headwall Speed Skiing Track. Racers reach speeds of up to 170 kmh and accelerate from 0 to 170 kmh in approximately eight seconds on the 300 metre, 50 degree course.
Sun Peaks Resort is not only one of the fastest growing resorts in North America it is also the home to the fastest skier in Canada. In April 2003 Sun Peaks resident Don Gagnon set a new Canadian Speed Skiing Record at a blistering 226.27 kmh in Les Arcs, France.
"If you have never witnessed the sight or sound of the world's best speed skiers flying past you at over 170 kmh, barely touching the snow, then you do not want to miss this spectacle of speed," says Vince Accardi, Director of Marketing and Media Relations for Tourism Sun Peaks. "This event is as exciting for spectators as it is for our World Cup racers!"
