cwsaa-logoBritish Columbia’s ski and snowboard industry is encouraging the province to maintain BC Family Day on the second Monday of February.

The urging is in response to a call from some interest groups to move the annual holiday to February’s third weekend. The move would correspond BC’s Family Day with Family Days across Canada and Presidents’ Day holiday in the United States.

The Canada West Ski Areas Association (CWSAA) argues that US and out-of-province holidays make the third weekend of February among the busiest on BC’s ski slopes. Rescheduling BC Family Day may force an end to ski resorts’ ability to offer the on-slope discounts currently enjoyed by BC residents during their annual provincial holiday. CWSAA’s recent BC Family Day Ski Promotions have offered BC residents the opportunity to ski for half price.

“BC Family Day has proven to be a huge success on the 2nd Monday in February. British Columbians are able to enjoy BC ski resorts, and other BC tourism experiences, without competing with holiday travellers from other provinces and the USA. This maximizes the quality of Family Day experiences, and revenues for the tourism industry, which drives incremental tax revenues for the province,” said David Lynn, President and CEO of CWSAA.

CWSAA is encouraging BC residents to oppose the move in the online vote currently conducted by CBC News. See https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/family-day-in-b-c-should-be-moved-says-surrey-board-of-trade-1.2958909
